Landrec custom fabrication STEAM play environment at kidSTREAM Childrens Museum.

Custom Fabrication STEAM Play: KidSTREAM Case Study

When designing outdoor learning landscapes, integrating custom fabrication STEAM play environments is essential. This dedicated structural approach completely reshaped how children interact with physical science and art at kidSTREAM Children’s Museum in Camarillo, California.

Landrec began working alongside kidSTREAM in 2021 to design the museum’s outdoor play exhibits. Initially, we focused on the early concept stage. Consequently, the vision was never to create a collection of separate, isolated play structures. Instead, we shaped the entire 20,000-square-foot outdoor landscape as one complete, fluid, and connected experience.

We engaged in several years of intense collaboration, strategic planning, engineering design, material development, and meticulous construction. Ultimately, it has been incredible to see that shared vision open to the public.

A Vision for Holistic Learning Landscapes

From the first architectural sketches, we maintained a strict goal. We wanted to create an environment where every square inch had a clear, developmental purpose. Therefore, we intentionally mapped out the outdoor environment to invite families to explore, move, climb, gather, imagine, and discover.

Furthermore, we prioritized custom fabrication STEAM play principles over generic off-the-shelf equipment. This allowed us to blend physical activity directly with kidSTREAM’s foundational educational models. As a result, the entire site functions as a multi-sensory sandbox. It lowers the psychological barrier to challenge and offers a high-velocity neurological reset.

Designing for Every Learner

Universal, equitable play anchored our architectural blueprint. Specifically, we designed this environment to feel welcoming, layered, and inclusive. It deeply engages a wide range of ages, physical abilities, neurotypes, and distinct learning styles.

Custom Fabrication STEAM Play Built to Last

To support this rigorous educational mission, Landrec designed, engineered, and built a substantial array of custom thematic elements. We fused heavy, architectural-grade timber with high-precision, artistic steel fabrication. Consequently, this process brought regional storytelling directly into the physical infrastructure.

Key custom-built installations and structural highlights manufactured for kidSTREAM include:

  • The Giant Sea Kelp Climber & Wave Mound: These highly challenging, structural steel climbing elements utilize complex netting systems. They directly mirror local marine ecosystems.
  • Wildwood Timber Play Elements: These organic, heavy timber structures feature raw-character wood. For example, the space includes our custom-designed Lazy Diamond climber, Y Branch structural balances, and natural Play Stumps.
  • The Native Mound Amphitheater & Timber Shelter: These deep structural spaces utilize earthen architecture and timber frame engineering. They anchor community gatherings, outdoor science classes, and public performances.
  • The Channel Islands Play Area: This colorful, high-impact regional exhibit space translates the geography and dynamic energy of Ventura County into safe, durable, and highly tactile climbing pathways.

Moving Beyond Static Equipment

The size and scope of this project serve as an important industry reminder. Intentional play spaces can and should be much more than static, uninspired plastic equipment. Indeed, they possess the power to become community anchors. Children return to them vividly in their memories, foundational STEAM learning feels natural, and diverse families gather seamlessly.

We are profoundly grateful to have helped design and build kidSTREAM’s outdoor ecosystem from early concept to final precision completion. Additionally, we are deeply humbled to see Ventura County families now playing, exploring, and creating within the universe we built together.
